Monica is forced to retrieve the hard disk and seeks an escort

Heart of the Hunter

The action in which Monica Kleintjes is forced to retrieve the hard disk and seeks an escort turns a private family crisis into a time-limited intelligence mission. Her father, Johnny Kleintjes, is being held to compel her cooperation; the required disk is in his study safe; and she has only seventy-two hours to take it to Lusaka. Because she uses artificial legs and says she cannot travel quickly or effectively alone, she asks Thobela Mpayipheli to help deliver the data and save her father. The sequence brings personal vulnerability, physical constraints, and state-level intelligence stakes into a single urgent choice.

The Threat Against Johnny Kleintjes

Janina Mentz establishes the pressure on Monica by telling her that her father is in trouble. When Monica asks what that means, Mentz describes the problem as Johnny having made a promise he could not keep. The understated explanation soon gives way to a direct threat: Johnny is with Mentz, and he will be killed if Monica does not cooperate. Mentz urges her to stay calm and presents compliance as the means by which she might save him. The call therefore makes the terms of the demand unmistakable: Monica is not simply being asked to retrieve property but is acting under the threat of her father’s death.

The coercion is organized around specific knowledge Monica can provide. She explains that her father said a hard-disk drive is in the safe in his study. Mentz checks that Monica is following the conversation, then asks her to locate the disk. Later, after Monica reports that she has it, the demand shifts from retrieval to delivery. The safe and disk are not incidental details: they give the threat a practical sequence, from the captive father to the family home and then to the appointed meeting place.

Retrieval and the Seventy-Two-Hour Deadline

In a later conversation with Thobela Mpayipheli, Monica explains that a call came from Lusaka. The callers already have some disks, she says, but want another one from her father’s safe. This account identifies the demand as part of a larger effort to obtain information, while making clear that the disk she retrieves is distinct from the material the callers already possess. Mentz sets the destination as the foyer of the Republican Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia, and gives Monica seventy-two hours to meet her there. She warns her not to be late or foolish, invoking Johnny’s age to reinforce the danger of delay.

The deadline converts the threat into a logistical constraint. Monica must get the disk from the safe, travel to another country, and reach the specified hotel within a fixed interval, while her father remains in the captors’ hands. Mentz’s order leaves little room for negotiation or independent planning: the place and time are stipulated, and the consequence of failing to cooperate has already been made explicit. The urgency is thus both practical and coercive, binding Monica’s movements to the life of someone she is trying to protect.

Monica Seeks an Escort

When Monica tells Thobela about the call, she explains the task plainly: she must deliver the disk in Lusaka, and the callers will kill her father if she does not. She then asks why Thobela is wasting time sitting there and says that she needs his help to deliver the data and save Johnny. Her request makes the action’s immediate objective clear. Monica is not asking Thobela to retrieve the disk for her; she has already obtained it and needs assistance carrying out the dangerous journey.

She also explains why travelling alone is not a workable option. Raising the hem of her long skirt, she shows Thobela her artificial legs, made of wood and metal, and tells him that she is slow and not very effective. The scene presents this as a concrete limitation on the urgent mission rather than an abstract description of her character: a seventy-two-hour journey becomes harder when speed and mobility are restricted. Monica identifies her need directly and seeks an escort who can help her get the data to its destination. The evidence establishes her request, but does not by itself establish Thobela’s answer at that moment.

The Disk and the Larger Intelligence Stakes

The importance of the disk becomes clearer when Janina Mentz later addresses the information on it. She says that the material concerns a mole at the highest level, code-named Inkululeko, and could cause extensive damage in the wrong hands. She argues that the intelligence service must protect the State and focus on the facts rather than sympathy for the people involved. This later disclosure places Monica’s pressured errand within a consequential intelligence conflict: the disk is sought not merely as an object but as a carrier of sensitive information whose exposure threatens powerful interests.

The official response also shows how quickly the pursuit becomes a struggle over public interpretation. The Intelligence Minister complains that each new radio report is making Thobela look more like a hero while the government looks like the Gestapo, and demands a public-relations solution. Janina proposes emphasizing his past work in organized crime, his use of violence and intimidation, and his alleged obstruction of the State. These later efforts do not alter the immediate terms of Monica’s mission, but they reveal the public narrative growing around the people and information caught up in it. The threatened daughter, the captive father, the hard disk, and the escort she requests all sit inside a contest in which both the contents of the data and the official account of events are treated as matters of national consequence.
